Indonesia is as safe or (unsafe) as any other country, so the normal rules of common sense apply.
- Do not pull out large sums of money in public places.
- Do not leave valuables unattended.
Its safe to walk anywhere at any time but you will safer if there is two of you.
- Don't surf on your own in the middle of nowhere.
- Inform your accommodation owner if you are taking a surf trip out of the area.
- Bring with you a substantial medical kit.
Health care is good in some cities, however most times you are surfing its only you and your friends you can rely upon. link to medical kit
- Purchase travel insurance before you leave...Never travel with out it!
- There is a list of vaccinations you need to stay safe here. Please check with your local G.P for jabs needed.
There are chemists in every town they stock most of the ‘over the counter’ everyday drugs.
- If you need specific drugs then we suggest you bring a stock with you.
Malaria: Malaria and Dengue fever are here in Indonesia. Dengue you will only find in the wet season. Malaria is all year round and you have to take precautions.
I live here and do not take anti malarial tablets, the choice is yours.
Make sure you cover your skin at night with lightweight clothing and socks. Anything else showing apply with anti mosquito repellent. This applies to both people taking and not taking anti malarial tablets. Anti-malarial tablets only prevent the chance of getting malaria; they do not protect 100%. Speak with your local G.P. for information on anti-malarial tablets.
Bring a good quality mosquito net with you, as some here are not of the best quality.
Sun: The sun here is very strong, always bring with you at least +30 sun block. Zinc is very good as well. Watch the backs of your legs when surfing. Always remember to drink lots of water. In a hot, humid and salty environment your body needs to replenish itself much more regularly.
Photographs: Its fine to take photographs or videos, common courtesy applies, just ask people before you take. Avoid taking pictures of military establishments and personnel.
